AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) + Tretinoin: Are They Compatible?

Avoid

Information from the FDA label and published sources. Not medical advice.

Prescription-strength warning

Tretinoin: Tretinoin is a prescription retinoid — significantly stronger than OTC retinol. Its irritation and photosensitivity are far greater, so treat any retinol-based guidance here as a minimum, not a ceiling.

Why

Prescription tretinoin is significantly stronger than OTC retinol. Combining it with AHAs can cause severe irritation, peeling, hyperpigmentation, and barrier breakdown.

Usage guidance

Do not stack. If you must use both, alternate weeks, not nights. Consult your dermatologist before introducing AHAs on tretinoin-treated skin.
