Ingredient compatibility

BHA (Salicylic Acid) + Tretinoin: Are They Compatible?

Caution

Information from the FDA label and published sources. Not medical advice.

Prescription-strength warning

Tretinoin: Tretinoin is a prescription retinoid — significantly stronger than OTC retinol. Its irritation and photosensitivity are far greater, so treat any retinol-based guidance here as a minimum, not a ceiling.

Why

BHA (salicylic acid) penetrates oil and is more tolerated on tretinoin-treated skin than AHAs, but still adds irritation load. Dermatologists sometimes prescribe both for severe acne — with strict alternating schedules.

Usage guidance

Alternate nights at most. Always use a ceramide-rich moisturizer and daily SPF.
