Ingredient compatibility
Carbomer + Methylisothiazolinone: Are They Compatible?
No label conflict foundInformation from the FDA label and published sources. Not medical advice.
Why
Carbomer is a pH-dependent polymer that functions as a thickening agent after neutralization, while methylisothiazolinone acts as a broad-spectrum preservative at concentrations typically below 0.01%. These ingredients serve complementary roles without chemical interaction—carbomer provides viscosity to stabilize the formulation, and methylisothiazolinone prevents microbial contamination. They are routinely co-formulated in water-based products without functional interference.
Usage guidance
This is a standard formulation pairing. However, methylisothiazolinone carries independent sensitization risk in leave-on products, so monitor for contact dermatitis symptoms regardless of carbomer presence. Rinse-off products pose lower allergy concern.
