Ingredient compatibility
Dimethicone + Water: Are They Compatible?
No label conflict foundInformation from the FDA label and published sources. Not medical advice.
Why
Dimethicone is a silicone polymer that forms a breathable occlusive film on the skin surface without interfering with water-based formulations. These ingredients are fundamentally compatible and routinely co-formulated in emulsions where dimethicone acts as a skin protectant while water serves as the aqueous phase carrier. No chemical reactivity or barrier compromise occurs between these components.
Usage guidance
You can safely use water-based products under or over dimethicone-containing formulations without concern. Dimethicone enhances barrier function by reducing transepidermal water loss while allowing topical actives in aqueous solutions to penetrate before occlusion.
