Essential Oils + Methylisothiazolinone: Are They Compatible?
CautionInformation from the FDA label and published sources. Not medical advice.
Why
Essential oils contain terpenes and aldehydes that compromise barrier integrity through lipid disruption, while methylisothiazolinone is a potent contact sensitizer already restricted in leave-on products due to high allergy rates. When combined, the barrier-weakening effect of essential oils increases penetration of the preservative, elevating sensitization risk and contact dermatitis potential.
Usage guidance
Avoid this combination in leave-on formulations entirely. If present in rinse-off products, limit exposure time and monitor for stinging, redness, or delayed hypersensitivity reactions that may emerge with repeated use.
